On Thursday I felt like getting out of town for a few hours, so I took a little drive. I wasn't even sure where I wanted to go. On impulse, I exited at Auburn (about 40 minutes northeast of us on I-80). I'd been by Auburn many times, but never actually been there. Turns out there's an "old town" there and a fabulous old courthouse. (Auburn is the Placer County seat.) It's right in the heart of gold country in the Sierra foothills. It's quite cute (if you like that sort of thing.)
It was sunny and very warm and I just walked around a bit, looking at the old buildings and snapping some pictures...
I hiked up to the courthouse and walked all around it. See that archway under the stairs in the background photo below? When you enter it, immediately to your right is the cell pictured below. That was where Placer County held its female prisoners until 1941!
On a separate note, I'm quite the happy camper. Between a library run and trips to the thrift stores here in Davis and up in Woodland, I have a nice stack of books to plow through in the next week or so. I've got quite a bit of quiet time to myself this weekend. J had a gig in Sacramento Friday night...he had to leave mid-afternoon yesterday to rehearse and then perform in S.F...he didn't get to bed till 2 am this morning and was back up at 6:30...to head down to Oakland for a choir rehearsal and to play a church service. While he's running all over the place playing music, I've been holed up at home (on the couch, sitting in bed, curled up on the porch)...READING. Heaven. :)
Currently reading: The Passion of Reverend Nash by Rachel Basch - and quite enjoying it. (Seemed like a good book for a Sunday.) ;) After all, how often does one get to read about a female minister protagonist? And this one's not your usual run-of-the-mill minister.

I love how you do your photos, you creative woman! (no idea what you did either) I enjoy random journeys and good books. I'm reading a Swedish detective series and obsessed with them. BTW, we have an Auburn in WA too!

What a great idea, just taking an exit and exploring. I love your photo collages! Especially the second one. Another Picasa trick?
