one of my all-time favorite
essays by patti is
'follow your desire lines'
about how we often abandon
the paths laid out for us
and choose instead to
carve out our own
to make our own way in
a pattern that feels most
natural to us
we read that essay and
nod sagely as if to agree
yes, yes indeed
this is what we do
and yet...
what does it say about us
when we don't do that?
what of the times when we
feel the tug to cut across
to take a shortcut or run
blindly through the forest
with no idea of what
awaits us? how many times
do we feel that urge
and suppress it?
how often do we take
the long way around
the familiar path the one
we tell ourselves is easiest
when we might as well
be jumping over hurdles for
all of the obstacles we throw
in front of our desire?
we see it and yet sometimes
choose to detour around it
getting caught up on the lost
highway of deservingness
it's a lonely road
no matter how well-traveled
let my path today be one
of urgency let me take all of
the shortcuts let me bypass
the familiar and search out
new directions as i answer
the call of my desire
