HEY! don't you hear
that voice?! the one that's
been screaming NOOOOOOOO!
yeah, i hear her
i'm just choosing to
ignore her right now
because if i listen to her
i won't find myself
saying yes saying yes
when i really mean NO
nothing gives me that
sinking feeling quicker than
that split second when i
hear NOOOOOOOOOO
in my head at the same time
i hear my my mouth saying yes
a timid yes that's really
more of an okay a shrugging
okay if you really want me to
it's not a real yes it's a
slump-shouldered resigned
sighing yes the kind that
comes with the bonus gift
of a queasy sick sinking
feeling in the pit of my stomach
usually followed by a
handshake and the words
'i'm going to hate this'
echoing in my head as i
leave the premises

Yes. That's exactly what goes through my mind as I see the proverbial sandbag swinging towards my head and find myself unable to duck.

I loved this. It is an exact description of the few seconds during which you are agreeing when you REALLY know you shouldn't be!
Great poem.

I know of what you speak here. What I don't know, is why it's so much easier to say a 3-letter word, "Yes" - than it is to say a simple two-letter word, "No." Maybe we need to let our inner two-year-olds come out and speak up for us - "No! No! No!" is the answer to everything at that age - even things they'd normally want, lol.

omg, i can so relate to this. the other day i put myself in danger by saying yes instead of no. it's upsetting to me when i hear that no and say yes. what is that about?

Too funny in a sinking sort of way...I recognize that feeling and enjoyed your writing!
