I'm leaving tomorrow for a week in Sin City. I don't know if I'll have a chance to post while I'm at my mother's. It occurred to me that outside of Hollywood, there's probably not a place in this country that's more about self-promotion than Las Vegas. That thought compelled me to leave you with a post today of things on the other end of the spectrum--projects that inspire the compassionate side.
Tonya recently funded a proposal through DonorsChoose and I'm feeling inspired to do the same. I've chosen a BloggersChoose challenge to purchase art supplies for a kindergarten class in Liberty, Mississippi. The proposal says that 100% of the students qualify as low-income and that many of the students' families don't have money for groceries, let alone crayons. The best part is that the supplies will be used not only by the 32 kindergarten students of the teacher who submitted the request, but also by the other 64 kindergarten students at the school. The request is for $1,597 and it's already been funded 13%, leaving a balance of $1,200 and change. I've set a goal of $500 to go towards this challenge. If you'd like to make a donation (of any size--maybe that $5 you might otherwise spend at Starbucks?), please click the DonorsChoose button in the left sidebar. The donation page features a "Where Art Thou" Lab II link which will take you to a page with all of the details for the request. The older I get the more I realize how profoundly important creativity is in our lives. Every child deserves to have art in their lives, don't you think?
Britt Bravo has a link to a wonderful project called Nata Village Blog. It was created through the combined efforts of a videographer/photographer named Jon Rawlinson and a Peace Corps volunteer in Nata named Melody Jenkins. Nata is a village in Botswana with an exorbitantly high HIV/AIDS rate--50% of the pregnant women there are infected. Be sure to check out their videoblog, too.
As a side note, Jon Rawlinson has another site called Scourist. Check it out.
Many of us are supporters of Doctors Without Borders. They're podcasting now. You can check out the May and June podcasts here. Thanks to Britt Bravo (again) for the link.
On a completely unrelated note, I've removed my blogroll. I realize some readers might be offended by that, but here's why. I read so many blogs that it's become hard to keep up with maintaining the blogroll. TypePad seems to cut off the list at 75 and it's a chore to continually add new links while simultaneously deciding who to delete. I don't like having to choose favorites among all of the blogs I read. I realized that maintaining the blogroll was starting to feel like an obligation, and when something starts to feel like that, it's time to let it go. I read several blogs that don't feature blogrolls, and I don't enjoy them any less because of it. And you can find each other via the comments anyway. (I'll continue to keep recent comments in the right sidebar.) It's not personal--it's just me trying to streamline how much time I spend on blog-related stuff versus, you know, having a life. :)
Lastly, this week, please don't forget to "Stop and Think"...
